How Much Aerobic Exercise Do You Actually Need This Week?
WHO guidance says 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic exercise weekly cuts health risks, but even 75 minutes helps — here's the science and history behind that number
The short answer: the World Health Organization recommends 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week for reducing health risks, though even 1 hour and 15 minutes per week can lower the risk of early death, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and cancer. If your week has been light on movement, that lower threshold is a realistic place to start rather than an excuse to wait for a 'perfect' schedule.
Despite this guidance, the WHO also reports that over 31% of adults and 80% of adolescents fail to maintain recommended physical activity levels. That gap between recommendation and reality is worth sitting with — it suggests the barrier isn't usually knowledge, it's consistency.
What Counts as Aerobic Exercise?
Aerobic exercise is physical activity of low to high intensity that primarily depends on the aerobic energy-generating process. The word itself comes from 'aerobic,' meaning relating to, involving, or requiring oxygen. Common examples include running, jogging, swimming, cycling, stair climbing, and walking. This is distinct from anaerobic exercise, such as strength training and short-distance running, which relies on different energy pathways.
Why Oxygen Matters at the Cellular Level
Inside your cells, mitochondria are the organelles that rely on oxygen for metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. This is essentially why sustained, oxygen-fueled movement — a jog, a swim, a long walk — feels different from a maximal sprint. The fuel source your body reaches for also shifts with intensity: at lower intensity, the body preferentially uses fat as its main fuel, while at higher intensity it shifts toward glycogen stored in muscles and liver. Amino acids contribute too, though in a smaller role, making up around 3% of total energy expenditure during aerobic exercise.
Both aerobic and anaerobic exercise promote the secretion of myokines, molecules that support tissue growth and repair. This is part of why mixing both types of training tends to serve overall conditioning rather than picking just one.
Where the Science Came From
The formal study of aerobic capacity has roots in 1922, when physiologist Archibald Hill introduced the concepts of maximal oxygen uptake and oxygen debt. That same year, Hill shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Otto Meyerhof for their work on muscle energy metabolism. Decades later, researchers Henry Taylor, Per-Olof Åstrand, and Bengt Saltin extended this work through the 1950s and 60s, deepening our understanding of how the body uses oxygen during sustained effort.
From Lab Research to Living Rooms
The science eventually turned into a cultural movement. In 1961, the Royal Canadian Air Force Exercise Plans were published, helping to launch modern fitness culture by giving ordinary people structured routines to follow. Then in 1966, Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper coined the term 'aerobics' itself. He followed with his book Aerobics in 1968, and in 1970 created the Cooper Institute for non-profit research and education in preventive medicine. A mass-market version, The New Aerobics, followed in 1979, bringing the concept to an even wider audience.
The 1970s also saw a running boom inspired by the Olympics, the New York Marathon, and the arrival of cushioned running shoes. Around the same time, Jacki Sorensen created aerobic dancing routines inspired directly by Cooper's book, and this style grew popular through the decade. Judi Missett took a related idea and developed and expanded it into Jazzercise.
The Home Workout Era
Aerobic exercise moved fully into living rooms in 1982, when Jane Fonda released her Workout exercise video, making home aerobics popular worldwide. By the 1990s, step aerobics had become popular too, driven in large part by products and programs from Reebok. Each of these moments — the Air Force plans, Cooper's books, Fonda's tapes, step platforms — represents the same underlying science becoming more accessible to more people, decade after decade.

None of this history changes the basic math: something is better than nothing, and the WHO's 75-minute floor is a meaningful target even on a busy week.
